Summary

Levoyd Williams, a fellow Lauderdale Lakes commissioner who is also the BBEO president, accepted [David Shomers]' $100 check for membership dues on Wednesday, Shomers said.

Shomers said he paid the membership dues out of his own personal funds. But the city paid the annual membership dues for [Williams], Commissioner Hazelle Rogers, and all the other Lauderdale Lakes commissioners except Shomers.

"I think it is one of the worst mistakes that can be done by any organization that applies for tax exempt status and receives public funds," said [Sylvia Poitier], who is black. "I am not a member, or have any connection to them, but it's time for them to get it together and allow everyone who is, or has held public office to join, particularly Commissioner Shomers."
