Commentary: Funding for New State Archives Building Is Long Overdue

Summary


Since 1997 a determined group of archivists, historians, librarians, and genealogists have been pacing the hallways and offices of the Arizona Legislature. These citizens haven't been seeking crucial historical information or long-lost documents. Instead, they have diligently pursued funding for a new state archives building.

There have been many ups and downs over this seven-year period, but as of today the building is not yet fully funded. There is near unanimous consensus that there is a dire need for the new building. Yet, there always seems to be a greater priority or crisis that prevents the state from starting construction. Supporters of the building are beginning to ask themselves: If not now, when?
