The July 1996 meeting of world leaders in Geneva, Switzerland, to establish specific goals and policies for the reduction of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases is a step toward preventing climate change caused by greenhouse gases. However, a large number of industries, such as the oil, automobile and electric industries, would be economically disadvantaged by such policies and therefore are lobbying against such efforts.
