Summary
Jane Orr is a well-groomed woman: stylish red hair, understated makeup, manicured nails and coordinated outfits. So it is difficult to picture her in Puerto Cabezas, a very poor town on Nicaragua's east coast. The country is the second poorestin the Western Hemisphere, with 50 percent of its population under- or unemployed and many of its children abandoned because their parents can't afford to take care of them. Jane went with 16 others from her church, Believers Church on Peek Trail, to spend her vacation doing mission work at the Casa Bernabe Orphange in July. They took duffel bags of donated items for the orphans with them. While there, they painteda new building and helped to build another, assisted at the local hospital, taught vacation Bible school and played with the children. "The orphanage provided us with several interpreters, but I was wishing I had spent more time learning Spanish," Jane said.
Western Branch Little League is "The Little League where Girls are First." It is also the Little League of girls who are good sports. After winning all their district tournaments, the league's All-Star Girls Fastpitch Champions in the 9- and 10-year-old division left Chesapeake at 4 a.m. July 14 to travel to the state tournament in Coeburn, Va. Perhaps a little nervous competing at the state level for the first time, the girls unfortunately didn't do as well. But they were certainly gracious about it. "We played our best, had fun and that is really all that matters," BrittanyHobbs told her mother, Kristi. Congratulations to the team for their effort and their attitude: Lexxis Blanchard, Kendall Bowen, Delaney Conter, Stephanie Folkner, Kaitlyn Hasty, Hannah Heath, Brittany Hobbs, Bailey Johnson, Madyson Kelly, Emily Phillips, Keeley Phillips, Emily Plumee, Chloe Robinson, manager Scott Kelly and coaches Spencer Folkner and Bobby Robinson.See the full content of this document
