Local Church Holds Divestment Discussion

Summary

The issue surrounding divestment is not the only contentious issue that has arisen between Jews and Presbyterians. In October 2004, two prominent Jewish organizations criticized a Presbyterian Church delegation for meeting with members of Lebanon's Hizballah. The controversy surrounded remarks made by Rev. Ronald Stone, a retired social ethics professor at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, who was quoted as saying "relations and conversations with Islamic leaders are a lot easier than dealings and dialogue with Jewish leaders," and that "we treasure the precious words of Hizballah and your expression of good will towards the American people."

[Sharona Shapiro]'s stance was in stark contrast to that of [William Gepford]'s, objecting to divestment and its perceived bias against Israel. Shapiro offered her alternative to divestment from Israel, and that is to invest in Palestine, a recent venture undertaken by Senator Carl Levin and four Jewish and Palestinian Americans. This concept was later refuted by audience members who stated that investment is worthless as long as there is an occupation. Shapiro blasted divestment as "anti-Semitic" and "anti-Israel" while paying little attention to the Palestinian side.
