Summary


When the afternoon bells ring in most schools, children head for home or day-care centers.

But in 10 Evansville-Vanderburgh public schools, as many as 70 percent of the kids stay in school so they can learn to swim, cook, tap-dance, fish, perform in the drum line, sing in the choir -- dozens of activities made possible by grants from the U.S. Department of Education.
