There can be little doubt that diversity has benefited this state. Arrivals from other countries have helped keep New Jersey from losing population in recent years, despite an outflow of residents to other states. People of Asian and Hispanic descent have been the fastest-growing segment of New Jersey's population in this decade: 20 percent of the state's residents in 2006 were foreign-born, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
