Netscape Communications Pres and CEO Jim Barksdale views the World Wide Web as part of the Internet, although most people generally refer to the Internet as the Web. The Internet performs many functions, such as E-mail and file transfers, in addition to the Web. Netscape's research show there are over 50 million current Web users and 60 million Internet users. The Internet is expected to have 199 million users by the end of the century. Between two and three million users actually purchased something on the Internet in 1996, resulting in revenues of around $250 million. Revenues are expected to top the $1 billion mark in 1997. The Web is a great medium for advertising, but a solid business model is required before a company can make money over the Web. Intranet technology will change the way business is conducted, particularly with small businesses.
