District Attorney [Richard A. Brown] said that, according to trial testimony, 30-year-old Reena Francis was sitting in the backseat of the family's Nissan Maxima with her 14-month-old son, Devin, on the afternoon of August 28,2008, when her husband pulled up to the dry cleaners at 202-16 Hillside Avenue and exited the vehicle, leaving the keys in the ignition and the engine idling. Almost immediately, the defendant [Ruben Fernandez] jumped into the driver's sear and drove off with Ms. Francis and her son still in the car. As the car headed west along Hillside Avenue, at speeds of upward to 50 miles per hour, Ms. Francis struggled with the defendant and told him to stop.
