Carbines: a handier type of long arm.

Carbines as a genre of firearms have always interested me, whether military types or the saddle-ring lever guns of the Old West. Back in 1964, I heard the DCM was selling off US M1 carbines to bona-fide NRA members for a mere $20. To my 15-year-old mind, I figured if I just had one of those all would be right with the world forevermore. Of course, I was too young, but I got my father to join the NRA and in due time my very first carbine of any type arrived. In the 4-plus decades since, I've owned scores of carbines of all types ranging from a Civil War issue percussion Sharps Model 1863 to a Colt CAR-15 autoloader.
