HERE'S SOMETHING that won't surprise any one: Cell phones are expensive in America. How much more expensive, compared with the rest of the world, is anyone's guess.

A much-quoted study by the Organization for Economic Co- Operation and Development found Americans pay more than people in all but a few of the organization's 30 countries. For the heaviest users, the OECD study found Americans pay the sixth-highest costs, at $636 a year. In Denmark, the cheapest nation measured, a year of cell phone chatter costs just $183.
