Pearl Insurance executives knew something had to change. Three years ago, the Illinois-based broker, direct marketer and third-party administrator recognized that one of its legacy systems wouldn't let it tap a growing online marketplace for professional liability coverage. After scrutinizing its options in 2006, the company took a modular approach to system replacement. Pearl's recently completed second project expanded the online option to all real estate agencies and added another module for policy administration functions. Gary Kirkham, the senior director of insurance industry solutions for Pegasystems Inc, has seen the issue play out from both sides. He was the VP of planning and support for American National Insurance Co when the mid-tier Galveston, TX-based carrier decided to hire Pegasystems for a legacy related updating. This involves defining the process with a business-side person and then streamlining the steps. The end result develops an interface with a Web-browser application.
