Summary


[William J. Cone, Jr.], Sr. passed away last week after a brief illness, which left him in a hospice care facility for a short period of time. He was 75, and his life was filled with historic accomplishments and countless fulfilled dreams. Cone served on numerous community service advisory boards; was a deacon in his church, a neighborhood volunteer, and one of the founding members of the Midtown Business District, an association of Black business owners in northwest Fort Lauderdale. For nearly 50 years he and his wife of 53 years, Electa, owned the landmark William J. Cone Plaza on Sistrunk Boulevard as well as other rental properties in the central Fort Lauderdale area.

During a 1999 interview, Mr. Cone offered insights into his past, and his vision for the future. "I have been blessed," he said. "I fell in love with my wife as soon as I saw her...she had long pretty hair, and I liked that. She could pull me through the woods in the dark and I wouldn't care, she's beautiful."
