Summary


THE bridge project linking Malaysia and Indonesia seems to be on again. The benefits seem to outweigh the risks.

SOME TIME IN 1995 BEFORE THE ASIAN Financial Crisis, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested the construction of a bridge connecting Malaysia from Melaka to Dumai in Indonesia. However, the 1997/98 crisis put the project on hold. The 48-km bridge over the narrowest strip of the busiest straits, the Straits of Melaka, has been taken up again by a private entity, Strait of Malacca Partners Sdn Bhd. The company headed by a former banker, Tan Sri Ibrahim Zain, has the strong support of the state government of Melaka and the Riau province of Indonesia. In addition, Temasek, Singapore's GLC, and Malaysian companies like UEM and IJM have shown keen interest in the project.
