Four years ago, the TBA formed the Credit Union Task Force to help coordinate its efforts to combat the ever-increasing threat to the banking industry posed by a new breed of credit unions. Over the past four years, the task force has worked closely with the American Bankers Association to develop strategy and energize a grassroots effort to, among other things, oppose the passage of the mis-named Credit Union Regulatory Improvement Act. The new breed of credit unions, however, ignores their traditional mission and exploits their tax exempt status to go after any and all customers. The latest strategy of the credit unions is to try to do away with the concept of the common bond.
