First Brands Corp. creates new network using fiber optics.

Summary

Local Area Networks

Chemical and plastic bag manufacturer First Brands Corp switches from coaxial to fiber-optics cabling for its local area network (LAN) to reduce costs, increase processing speed, and prepare for future network growth. The 12-fiber cabling used by First Brands offers several times the capacity held by coaxial cabling. Fiber-optics cabling also takes up less space and costs less. Whereas prior to fiber-optics the firm used an ArcNet network operating at about 2M-bps, the firm is now planning to migrate to a Proteon token-ring network which works at a much faster 16M-bps. The fiber-optics linked network is also fit to run the speedy fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) standard that is on the rise. The network's life span is expected to be as long as 20 years.
