Nor do they know not to touch their noses while taking an order, not to call young women "madame," not to clear food before it's done and not to linger awkwardly at a table to recite the dessert list, since it's already printed on the dessert menu.

The maitre d'ignores you when you walk in. The unsmooth host bumbles an explanation of why a table isn't ready. "We have a table for you, but it's just still full of people."

Maybe these prices wouldn't seem extreme if Bookbinder's were the only show in town. But just around the corner places like Buddakan, Fork, Bistro 7 and Farmacia--need we go on?--do just about everything Bookie's does, but better.
