BONING UP ON CALCIUM We were discussing how we would illustrate our Post series on calcium and other minerals when our nurse, Helen Phillips, told us about her mother, who is 5-1/2 inches shorter than she was on her wedding day.
Helen stands a willowy 5 '9", andafter having three children, now ages 12 through 17, Helen has a waistline of 25 inches. Her mother, Helen Bledsoe, had looked like Helen on her wedding day; now, at age 78, she stands 5 '3-1/2". We hurried Helen'smother off to the hospital to have her bone density measured. The technicians placed a band around her lower arm to hold it in place and put a tiny bit of radiation through her ulna. with elegantly sensitive instruments, they can tell how much bone she has left, whether her bone is porous and hollow, or whether it still contains enough calcium for weight-bearing.
