Summary
The economic turmoil of 2009 had a significant impact on finance and insurance not-for-profit Blue Cross Blue Shield North of North Carolina. The company realized existing leadership skills gaps as a result of the uncertain times: Managers were not fully prepared to achieve corporate goals or lead emerging business opportunities. The learning function responded by developing an enterprisewide competency framework and performance standards, assessing managers current capabilities against those standards, and implementing training to address the gaps. The program was offered to all 600 formal leaders as well as emerging leaders.
