Data from the Army Recruiting Command indicate that African American enlistment has dropped 41 percent--from 23.5 percent in fiscal year 2000 to 13.9 percent of recruits in fiscal year 2005. In a 2003 Pew Research Center survey, African Americans, more than any other ethnic group, were opposed to the war in Iraq--only 44 percent supported military action compared with 73 percent of Whites and 67 percent of Latinos.
