Black Beauty

Summary

This is the golden anniversary of the Ebony Fashion Fair, and this year's title is "Glam Odyssey, A Fashion Journey into Bliss & Beyond." Producer Eunice W. Johnson has traveled the world over all the 50 years to discover and select the finest in designers and couture. The first Ebony Fashion Fair show had four models traveling to 10 cities; today's show sees 13 models visit nearly 180 cities.

Models wearing cheerleader-type miniskirts and high, white boots were followed by two gals in fringed Davy Crockett outfits paired with frontier hats and boots. Nina Ricci, usually a subdued and classic designer, was represented by a superbad pirate's frock.

Stepping out of the Steppes was a model wearing a silver-hued damask sheath topped with a coat generously adorned with Russian sable. Vaudeville was represented in low-slung check pants and red bowler. A voluminous chartreuse, silk taffeta, balloonsleeve opera coat by Paris designer Gilles Montezin created an unusual silhouette. The model looked like a parachute ready to be inflated and take off. Another Paris designer, Jean-Louis Scherrer, came up with tiers of pleated ruffles that looked like lineups of Post-It notes.
