A new report from the National Research Council (NRC) charges that increased corn ethanol production would have a profound impact on water quality and availability. With the help of a US Department of Energy grant in 2002, the company began working to extract sugars for fermentation, not from starches but from cellulose and lignin, the tougher insoluble materials that stiffen plant cell walls.
