Bgsu Lively Arts Calendar, March 31-April 14, 2010

Summary

March 31-The BGSU Faculty Scholar Series features presentations by Dr. Laura Kennedy, an instructor of musicology, and Dr. Ronald Scherer, a professor of communication disorders, at 8 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Kennedy will present "A Creative History: Shostakovich's Sketches for Symphonies No. 8 and 10," and Scherer will discuss "Teaching Singing: Science Meets the Art at BGSU." Free.

April 6-Cartoonist Nina Paley mixes genres, eras, jazz and autobiographical material in her 2008 film "Sita Sings the Blues," the next offering in Bowling Green State University's Tuesdays at the Gish film series. The film is a modern retelling of an ancient Indian tale of marriage and fidelity, enhanced by the music of Annette Hanshaw. The screening is at 7:30 p.m. in the Gish Film Theater, Hanna Hall. Free.

April 4-Sunday Matinees at the Gish Film Theater at Bowling Green State University con-tinue with "The Outlaw," a 1943 film directed by Howard Hughes, with Jane Russell and Walter Huston. Proof positive that Hughes was once an able, intelligent director, this Western was unusual in its time for its literate, witty treatment of the Billy the Kid legend. With the cartoon "Dripalong Daffy," from 1951 and commentary from film historian Dr. Jan Wahl, the screening begins at 3 p.m. in Hanna Hall. Free.
