About two-thirds of the way up the steps you can hear the rush of a buried city sewer line. A few steps higher there's a spot to pause in the shade of a weeping willow for another of the Slopes' casually breathtaking views of the Downtown skyline. The willow was planted by Carl Walsack, who's lived next to the steps on Pius for three decades. The Magee-Womens Hospital mechanic keeps both his yard and the city's right-of-way neatly groomed, and seems resigned to the mild annoyances the steps bring. "A lot of hanging out," he says. "People sitting. Dating after that."
