Summary
Hathaway opens as a pre-festival kick off for the BeanTown Jazz Festival with a Friday night concert at the Berklee Performance Center. A graduate of Berklee, which she attended from 1986 through 1990, she sees Berklee as the place where she shaped her music by constantly performing at clubs like Wally's and Connolly's in Lower Roxbury and by association with fellow music students from all over the world. "I grew up there," she says. She loves Boston for those memories but notes, "I lived in a vacuum." That cocoon did notblock out the racism here entirely. "I was walking through the Fenway and a guy actually spat out of his car window at me. It didn't mar my experience overall but I was living in an extremely myopic way. It didn't have the impact on me it could have," she said.
