The Military Sealift Command has awarded BAE Systems Ship Repair in Norfolk an $8.6 million fixed-price contract to perform topside repairs to the Arctic, one of the command's four fast combat support ships.

BAE Systems' work - part of a 55-day overhaul package - will concentrate on cleaning and inspecting tanks, underwater hull preservation and various maintenance aboard the vessel.

The work will take place at BAE's shipyard in the Berkley area of Norfolk and is expected to be completed Sept. 24.
