Summary
Early in the film, the school's English and drama teacher, Percy Anderson (The Cooler's Ron Livingston) gives the school play's coveted role of Anne Frank to [Kimberly]. Later, Anderson takes the role away from Kimberly and gives it to her best friend, Brittany (Elisabeth Harnois).
One action that's never satisfactorily explained is Kimberly and Brittany's taking Randa (Adi Schnall), the new Muslim student, into their inner circle. While Kimberly and Brittany are gorgeous, sexy and worldly, the mousy Randa, in her black head-scarf, long skirt and long-sleeved blouse, doesn't even know the meaning of the word "lesbian." The establishment kids both mock and condescend to her. "I know all about the immigrant experience," coos Brittany. "I'm Canadian."Pretty Persuasion isn't without its satiric riffs. The celebrity worship, alienation and materialism of contemporary American life aren't original targets, but they're sometimes effectively sent up in the film. A phone rings while Kimberly, her father and her stepmother are eating; each one pulls out a cell phone. Randa, the Muslim girl, says she plans to become a doctor in order to help the poor; Kimberly points out that in America, doctors don't do that.See the full content of this document
