Summary
Summer vacation is upon us. Legislators and school administrators and educators are busily preparing for the coming year. I have messages for all.
Legislators: The No Child Left Behind Act will come up for review this year. One necessary addition is the creation of national standards in math and reading. The rhetoric of "local control" has been a despoiler of past opportunities to reach national agreement on what our children should know and be able to do. It has also put us in a "race to the bottom" in international comparisons. Countries that lead the educational world have national standards that ensure that students in their schools have the same expectations no matter where they live.See the full content of this document
