"It's fantastic," [Georgina Dodge] said. "It's a program I can't say enough good about."

The efforts may have contributed to a significant increase in the retention of African-American students. While in 2001, 73.9 percent of black students who entered as freshmen returned as sophomores - significantly lower than the 86.5 percent for white students at the university - in recent years, the gap has been lowered. The retention rate of this year's overall freshman class is expected to be 91 percent - and the African-American rate 89 percent.

While Dodge is pleased with the progress, she recognizes that there is much to be done. Despite the growth in African-American students, the number of African-American students attending Ohio State University still ranks below the percentage of African-American students enrolled in Ohio's high schools, and there is a need on several fronts - including strengthening the academic performance of African-American students in high school and ensuring that more African-American students graduate from Ohio high schools, to improve the number of African-American students enrolling at Ohio State University.
