Department of Defense's distance learning network
The Department of Defense's distance learning network, headquartered at Fort Lee, VA, is using compressed 3.3-Mbps digital video over a point-to-multipoint satellite network, and costs are down from $600 to $200 an hour. The arrangement is interoperable so that all branches of the armed services can use it, and its quality is such that full-motion war games can be displayed at all sites simultaneously without degrading the system's performance. Audio teleconferencing, which has suffered during a changeover from analog to digital switching, will be upgraded. A spokesman says digital technology is essential in state-of-the-art teleconferencing systems because digital allows greater flexibility in configuring connections.See the full content of this document
