Attack On the Uss Stark

In order for the novice to understand the attack on the USS Stark and the ramifications and consequences, it is necessary to begin with a basic understanding of standard surface ship organization, particularly the FFG-7 or Perry-class frigate organization. The functions and personnel on a surface ship are divided into departments. Each department is specifically responsible for certain operations and functions.

On Perry-class frigates, the ship is divided into four departments: Engineering, Ship Control, Combat Systems and Support. All personnel with the exception of the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer are assigned to one of these departments.

Once a ship is commissioned, its crew is continually on watch. Officers and crewmen assigned to watch-keeping duties are trusted with the safety of the ship, its machinery and equipment, and all personnel.
