Summary
The Arab American delegation was briefed by Judiciary Committee counsel from the offices of Senators Dick Durbin, Patrick Leahy, and Russ Feingold on the PATRIOT Act reauthorization bill which has dominated much of Congress' session. Attendees were told of a last minute deal brokered hours earlier between Committee Democrats and Republicans to produce a bill that would leave committee with unanimous consent. "It was not all that we wanted, but it is progress," Senator Dick Durbin told the group. The bipartisan cooperation on the Senate Judiciary is especially rare in Washington these days. Significantly, Senator Feingold was the only Senator to vote against the PATRIOT Act in 2001, but did support the bill this time around because of the provisions ensuring judicial oversight and civil liberties protections.
