Arab American Writers Meet in Dearborn

Summary


The number of publishers there was not extensive, though it signified a growing interest in Arab-American writers, and more importantly, many are Arab-American publications. Publishers present at the RAWI conference included Syracuse University Press, the University of Arkansas Press, and Interlink Publishing. They are all interested in Arab-American writing. Interlink'-s catalog features extensive books by and about Arabs. A leading Arab-American publication, Mizna, which is based in Minneapolis, was there as well. The Baltimore Review, which is edited by Susan Muaddi Darraj, Meena magazine, the Mid-American Review, and Banipal were there as well. These kinds of outlets are important for spreading Arab-American writing.

The panels took on some challenging topics, such as the expectations and pressures put on Arab-American writers to satisfy certain stereotypes. For example, publishers may expect a terrorist or a woman forced to wear a hijab in the story. One panel also looked at the growing use of blogging, or self-published web diaries, as an outlet for Arab-American writing. Others considered how to move beyond the common, almost predictable themes, that have marked Arab-American writing. The panel that faced this issue was titled "Beyond Baklava and Grapeleaves." Arabic food is too prominent a subject, many felt.
