Andros Island Trip Brings Learning, Fun

Summary

A select group of students were chosen to go on a marine biology trip to ForFar Field Station on Andros Island, Bahamas. I was on of those lucky students. My name is [Mariya Kim] from Linden McKinley High School. Going on this trip was a new and wonderful experience for me. I was able to bond with other students from different schools and learn about life in the ocean as well as on the island. We spent a week on Andros Island, and every day I learned something new. When I first went snorkeling I was so afraid of being attacked by sharks or stingrays. I couldn't identify any kids of fish and my guard was always up. Through the course of the week, I started relaxing and really understood that I was able to identify the different species of fish and the different types of coral. When we went on land trips, we visited local villages and passed out candy to the local children. We were able to purchase sponges, hand-made baskets made of silver-top palm, seashells jewelry and much more, all custom made from materials round the island. I'd have to say my favorite adventure we went on was [Charlie]'s Blue Hole. The view was amazing and the 30 feet jump into the water was exhilarating. My experience on this trip was just extraordinary and I am very thankful that I was able to attend it.
