3rd edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language - Wood on Words - Column

The publishing company Houghton Mifflin Co will be making available to the American public the third edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (AHD3) on August 20, 1992. This new dictionary contains more than 200,000 words and forms, including 16,000 new words, 30,500 etymologies, 700 word histories, and more than 2,800 phrasal verbs and idioms. The enormity of the AHD3's contents is obvious in the oversize lode used for all its 2,184 pages. A key feature of the AHD3 is a unique Usage Notes and Usage Panel section that provides information on word usage as linked to issues such as gender, ethnicity, sexual preference and innovative jargon. The AHD3 also provides an 800 telephone number through which callers can listen to US celebrity Tony Randall talk about the English language. The AHD3 sells at $39.95.
