Arab league head Amr Moussa has tried and failed to get a recommendation for Egypt to have a permanent seat to represent the Arabs in the recently held elections for temporary seats of the United Nations Security Council. However, Moussa's intervention has resulted into a partial victory for Egypt as two additional seats were being proposed to be allocated for Africa, which will leave some chance for Egypt against two other claimants, South Africa and Nigeria. Amr Moussa Secures Partial Victory in Quest for Arab Security Council Seat
At the end of October, "elections" were held for five of the security Council's ten temporary seats. In fact, only one of the five actually was contested: Japan won by 188 votes to one against Bhutan. Argentina, Denmark, Greece and Tanzania all were unopposed to sit their two-year terms beginning in January. Algeria will continue to hold the fort for the Arab world for another year.
