High ambition: western leaders look for new ways to level the playing field.
Western North Carolina is a great place to live but a hard place to make a living. Its assets include rugged mountain beauty and a willing work force, but much of it is isolated, geographically and politically. New companies barely keep pace with plant closings. But initiatives such as the Education and Research Consortium, which bonds the region's institutions of higher learning, are bringing a new economic force to bear: high-speed Internet service.
