Summary

[Robert Redford]'s liberal heart is clearly on his sleeve in this timely exploration of politics, the media and the role of (often disaffected) young people in just-barely-into-the-future USA. As the senator touts his "new" strategy for the war-send smaller contingents to take on the enemy-his plan has already been implemented (Arian and [Ernest Rodriguez] are two of its implementers). The Washington sections ofthe film are the strongest, with the wily senator, who was first in his class at West Point but never saw battle, laying on flattery while tossing off catch expressions like "the American people," "the war on terror" and "evil" as he tries to overcome the journalist's growing antipathy. [Tom Cruise] hasn't been this charmingly sleazy since Magnolia.
