[Jon Meacham], editor of Newsweek and author of American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers and the Making of a Nation, was awarded ADL's 36th Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize. The award, endowed by Dwayne O. Andreas, President of the Andreas Foundation, recognizes individuals or institutions who, like Mr. Humphrey, have made significant and lasting contributions to the First Amendment of the Constitution. ADL National Director [Abraham H. Foxman] praised Mr. Meacham "for setting the record straight about the intent of our Founding Fathers" about the role of religion in United States government. "Faith coerced is not faith, it is tyranny," said Mr. Meacham.
