Conference Addresses Unique Challenges of Urban Education

Summary


This year's theme is "Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning." The main speaker will be renowned scholar and author Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, president of the Chicago-based communications firm African American Images Inc. He is the co-author of the afrocentric/multicultural curriculum titled SETCLAE (Self-Esteem Through Culture Leads to Academic Excellence).

"Jawanza Kunjufu is a very dynamic speaker, somewhat controversial, but he definitely gets educators and administrators thinking," [Kaye Manson Jeter] said. "We're very excited to have him on the program."

Internationally acclaimed artist and educator Willis "Bing" Davis, will present "Using Art in the Culturally Responsive Classroom." Dr. Sally Lewis from Youngstown University will present the Ohio Integrated Systems Model (OISM), a framework for meeting the federal mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.
