Bulletin Board of the Month

Feature books that link to the theme of aviation (e.g., Mercury 13, To Conquer the Air, Flight), books with characters that fly, or have a flying theme (e.g., Arthur and the Comet Crisis, Tar Beach, Harry Potter..., Hatchet, The People Could Fly). Make sure there is a balance between fiction and nonfiction. Include resources that link students to interesting information, e.g., websites, online databases, magazine articles, and interesting organizations and businesses. Use a theme like "Take Flight @ your library®." Take the theme in new directions over the course of a few months. Have students help contribute to the changing titles and resources represented on the bulletin board. Grades K-8.

Team up with the health/PE teacher to have students research healthy lifestyles and the importance of eating well. Students could conduct research on various diseases (e.g., diabetes, epilepsy, Alzheimer's, lung cancer, AIDS, etc.) and interview people impacted by these diseases. Grades 5-8.

Aviation History Month

Perhaps a teacher would like to pursue a research assignment that links to aviation. Students could be encouraged to brainstorm guiding questions that probe the history of aviation. How has aviation changed history? What discoveries and inventions emerged related to the advancement of aviation? What would the world be like today without the influence of advancements in aviation?
