Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) vetoed a bill that would have given the state's 55 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote in 2008, but supporters of the change are calling for a ballot initiative. On the same day the tour began, Carney's camp released a poll finding that the lieutenant governor has a 10-point lead on the treasurer, and that lead grows to 20 percentage points when "balanced profiles" of the two candidates were read to 405 Democrats-a poll Markell dismissed because it was done a day after the treasurer declared his candidacy in June. -

Across State Lines

ALABAMA

By the end of the month, expect to see a lot of people file to fill the seat of Republican U.S. Rep. Terry Everett. The 70-year-old Everett announced last month that he was not going to run in 2008. His 2nd District seat will be the only open congressional race in the state this cycle.

ALASKA

A jury has returned a guilty verdict against former state House Speaker Pete Kott on charges of bribery, conspiracy and extortion. Kott traded his legislative influence for bribes from VECO Corp., an oil field services company that was seeking to profit from a proposed natural gas pipeline.

ARIZONA

State Rep. Bill Konopnicki, a Republican who owns McDonald's franchises and radio stations in the northern part of the state, has formed an exploratory committee for a possible run for Congress next year. He is looking to fill the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi, who decided not to run for re-election amid controversy over a land swap involving a former business partner. Konopnicki said he will make his decision by early next year.
