In an interview, John J Fernandes, president and CEO of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, discussed the evolving role of AACSB in light of recent and future changes in business education around the world. He said that they have a clear mission: advancing quality management education worldwide through accreditation and thought leadership. Looking forward, there are many areas affecting the industry, and the difficulty will be to prioritize, and do the best they can. They will continue to strengthen the global market through their global services. Close to 40% of AACSB members are outside of the US now. When he first came to the AACSB, it was about 20%. Back then, the number of accredited schools outside the US was about seven percent. Now the total number of accredited schools outside the US is up to 17%. It doesn't take a genius to figure out where the world is going.

Author: How do you define the AACSB, what does it do for its members and for management?
Fernandes: I define AACSB in terms of the business school members themselves, and in terms of business schools throughout the world doing their best to get better. We facilitate that improvement primarily through our accreditation service, which is a 90-year-old product, but also through a number of other activities such as professional development opportunities through our active conference & seminar program, and our BizEd magazine targeting those involved in management education. We also have an electronic newsletter that informs our authence of the AACSB point of view. We have 16 different interest groups, in which schools come together under the AACSB flag to connect and pursue some interest of shared importance. In fact, we offer a fairly wide array of services, and one that we've added in the last few years deals with thought leadership for the management education industry.
