Summary


Shortly after the start of the New Year, Pentagon officials plan to gather for a lengthy discussion of how to better manage the Defense Department's 1,350 civilian executives and to identify up- and-coming leaders for jobs with department-wide responsibilities.

Historically, the Army, Air Force and Navy have selected and managed their civilian executives, but Pentagon officials think it is time to place all career executives under a common framework and have the department take a hand in their development, much as it does for military officers.
