SMITHFIELD - Tommye Dean Hatcher Taylor, 82, passed away March 21, 2006, at Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Blytheville, Ark., Tommye had been a resident of Smithfield most of her life. Tommye was a military nurse, 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II. She served in India in the 20th General Hospital. After her military service, Tommye continued practicing nursing at OBICI Hospital, then with Dr. Phillip Thomas' practice in Chuckatuck for 14 years. At the time of her death, Tommye was continuing her practice and had achieved, according to her family, a lifelong "Ph.D. in Motherhood."In addition, Tommye was a member of the American Legion Auxillary and a member of the Isle of Wight Rescue Auxillary. She was a lifetime supporter of the American Red Cross of Isle of Wight County. Tommye was an active member of Benn's United Methodist Church and the Grace Hodgsden Sunday School Class.
