Easley Wins Primary Handily, but Gop Race a Close One

Republicans were locked in a tight battle for the party's gubernatorial nomination Tuesday, as Democratic incumbent Michael F. Easley cruised to an easy primary victory.

With 392 of 2,755 precincts reporting unofficial results, Easley had 50,232 votes, or 85 percent, and Rickey Kipfer of Lee County had 8,942, or 15 percent .
