Summary
Bluegill at Toby's Supper Club. I'm ashamed that I didn't even know about Toby's until last summer. This unassuming restaurant, tucked away on South Dutch Mill Road for more than 40 years, satisfies long-time customers with a traditional supper club menu of steaks, chops, chicken and seafood. I was most impressed by the fried bluegill. The thin fillets are breaded lightly and fried gently. There aren't many places that treat a bluegill with proper respect, and this is one of the best.
Scones at Lazy Jane's Café. Could there be a restaurant more attuned to its location than Lazy Jane's is to Willy Street? I think not. Jane Capito's funky furnishings bring new meaning to the term "eclectic." Each table, chair, lamp, and knick-knack has been chosen with loving and personal care. So have the menu items. Whether it be applewood smoked bacon, nutty granola, La Brea bread for sandwiches or homemade soups and salads, the food here is at once downhome and upscale. But you'll have to find out for yourself why Jane is called the "Queen of Scones."Quiche at Manna Café & Bakery. Late in the year I discovered Manna Café, on North Sherman Avenue. Barb and Mike Pratzel ran the Collins House B&B for more than 20 years, so it's not surprising that they know how to turn out a good quiche. And believe me, these are among the best of the best. Sausage, sun-dried tomatoes and provolone quiche; ham and cheddar; broccoli and cheddar; smoked salmon; bacon and caramelized onion quiche. They're all baked thick and high, robustly flavored with a flaky, handmade crust. With its outstanding bakery items, sandwiches, soups and salads, Manna Café is quickly becoming a breakfast and lunch fave of the east- and north-side crowd.See the full content of this document
