Marine Soaks Up Life After Freak Accident

When Lance Cpl. Josh McDaniel joined the Marine Corps, he didn't imagine competitive sports as part of his career. Nor could he have guessed that the injury that would end his military career would stem from a freak accident. Two years ago, while he was attending a barbecue in Twentynine Palms, Calif., a grill exploded and accelerant landed on his face, chest and thighs, setting him on fire. A fellow Marine took off his T-shirt and wrapped it around McDaniel's head. Others worked to put out t...

Suffolk Should Pare Spending

JUSTIFYING a tax increase is never easy, but it should be especially difficult in the midst of a sticky recession. So far, there's a tie at the top for cities proposing the largest tax increase.

Chesapeake's Gang Problem

GANGS aren't new to Chesapeake, but the Police Department's decision to establish a unit dedicated solely to tracking their activity marks a welcome turn toward drawing public attention to the fight against organized crime. Officials had long publicly downplayed the presence of gangs in the city's neighborhoods and schools. That position became increasingly difficult to maintain as more youths flashed colors, as more graffiti defaced public and private property, and as more gang members brush...

The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will hold a military job fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Howard Johnson Plaza and Conference Center, 1815 W. Mercury Blvd., Hampton. What's in a Name? | Cape Charles

The origin of the name Fisherman Island seems self-explanatory - a likely recreation point for fishermen, or maidens. // But it's not that simple. The island along the Virginia barrier island chain off the coast of Cape Charles gets its name from a shipwreck in the 1700s. Irene Morris, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Virginia, said that about 300 years ago, a British cargo ship carrying linens met its demise, and the ship's remains were never removed.

Suffolk Could Take Cue From Big Apple to Fix Transit Woes

WHEN I was courting The Boss - and still sported an Afro - we'd frequently travel back to Queens to visit her family and friends. If we wanted to hit the clubs and restaurants in Manhattan, it required a 90-minute odyssey of bus and subway rides to reach the heart of The City.

The Capacity for Mendacity

"IF YOU want an abortion, you go to Planned Parenthood. And that's well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does." - Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., April 8 "(The statistic Kyl used) was not intended to be a factual statement." - statement from Kyl's office to CNN, later that day

History repeats itself Re "Voices of the Civil War," front page, April 10: I thank The Pilot for its thoughtful exploration of the causes of the Civil War. One seldom acknowledged cause of that war was economic fear.

The Curse of Free Money

THE LOBBY of the Federal Reserve Bank building in Kansas City, Mo., contains a money museum where a sign offers visitors "Free Money." It is an amusing anomaly, considering the views of the man in charge of the building. The free money in the lobby consists of shredded currency in small plastic bags. The free money that distresses Tom Hoenig, in his 20th and final year as president of one of the Federal Reserve's 12 regional banks, is being pumped into the economy by two policies of the Feder...
