RICHMOND Archaeologists have pulled a 400-year-old slate tablet from what they think was an original well at Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America, a historic preservation group announced Monday.

CHESAPEAKE - Carrie Baum Midgette, 88, died June 7, 2009. She was predeceased by husband, Woodrow Midgette and sons, James and Woodie Midgette. Left to cherish her memory are son, Leonard Midgette and wife Milgn; one sister, four brothers, seven grandchildren, and 16 great- grandchildren.

PORTSMOUTH - Lois VonPieler, 87, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009. She was a native of Johnson County, North Carolina, and was the daughter of the late Lillie and Ivan Creech Sr. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank VonPieler; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth VonPieler; and a grandson, Craig Shyver.

Clarence H. Bates Jr.

NORFOLK - Clarence Henry "Bud" Bates Jr. passed away June 6, 2009. He retired after 25 years in the U.S. Navy as senior chief. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, relaxing on his porch, and enjoying his view of the bay. He was also a great chef. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Florence A. Bates; his daughter, Florence Glaubke and her husband Freddy; and his son, Clarence H. Bates III; five grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and his canine companion, Binky.

A native of Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Viola Plummer and the widow of Robert W. Durbin. She is survived by her son, Robert J. Durbin; two grandchildren, Carrie Kline and husband Lee and John Robert Durbin; and two great- grandchildren, Madison A. Foley and Ian Robert Durbin.

CHESAPEAKE - Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ronald Joseph Veliz, 51, died Friday, June 5, 2009. He was a native of Tucson, Ariz., and was the son of the late Albert and Mary Silvas Veliz. He was a graduate of the University of Arizona, Class of 1980. Cmdr. Veliz was a decorated war hero and a United States naval aviator and veteran of the Gulf War and the Global War on Terrorism.
