Prime Time to Pick Baskets of Berries
PILED ON POUND CAKE. Packed into pies. Draped over waffles, or simmered and dripped into jelly jars. Strawberries are a versatile fruit. And they are back. Local farm fields are loaded with the plump berries, says Gail Moody Milteer, a market development manager for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which tracks that sort of thing. As of this week, Milteer says, almost all farms should be open for pick-your-own or to supply local grocery stores and farmers' markets.
